Hannah Hoch

Self Portrait featuring Raol Hausman.
There are many qualities within Hannah Hoch’s work that i appreciate and am a fan of. However, for me it is not only her photomontages that stand out, it is her experimentation within photography which also does so. This image especially. She raises the question of identity quite strongly, whether this be within conflict of gender- are men and women equally the same within their identity? or whether it be within who we are truly as people. The image leaves open many questions for the viewer to ask, answer and communicate in their own way. It’s simplicity but bold statement is what really triggers this connection and captivates the viewer leaving one full of wonder and admiration.

You can visit Hannah Hoch’s current exhibition at the Whitechapel Gallery which ends 23rd March.
